Business missing from AI search answers? Here is what to check

By Muhammad Usman Ali. Last reviewed 26 October 2026.

Key takeaway

A business missing from AI search answers usually has one of three gaps: the AI tool's crawler is blocked, the site is weak in regular search, or the web says too little about the business for an answer to quote. Check access first, then your normal Google rankings, then what other sites say about you.

Who this guide is for, and who should skip it

This page is for owners who asked ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, or another assistant to recommend a business like theirs, and saw competitors named instead. Most checks here need only a browser, your robots.txt file, and Google Search Console.

This is for you if

  • You ask an AI assistant for the best provider of your service in your city, and your business never comes up.
  • You rank on Google for some searches, but AI answers for the same questions cite other sites.
  • Your developer or hosting company added bot blocking, and you are not sure what it blocks.
  • An AI answer describes your business wrongly, with an old address, old services, or a competitor's details.

Skip this if

  • Your site gets no Google traffic at all. Fix regular search first, because AI features in Google draw on the same index.
  • You want to be named in every answer. Nobody controls what an AI tool says, and anyone who promises it is guessing.
  • You want to block AI tools from your content. That is a different job with different settings.

How owners usually describe it

The story goes like this. The owner, or a friend, types a question into ChatGPT: who is the best clinic, caterer, or consultant in Lahore? The answer names three or four businesses, often bigger ones, sometimes ones that have closed. The owner's business, which ranks on Google and has good reviews, is not there. Then they search on Google and see an AI Overview at the top that cites a directory and a blog, not them.

I put this story together from many owners' accounts. No one client said it in these words.

That last part is a useful clue. If Google's own AI Overview skips you for a search where you rank in the normal results, the gap is about how your page answers the question. If you do not rank either, the gap is in regular search, and fixing that comes first. For a broader drop in visits, start with my guide to falling search traffic.

How AI answers pick their sources

AI search tools do not all work the same way, but the ones most people use share a pattern. They search the web, read a set of pages, and write an answer that cites some of them.

Questiontyped or spokenRetrievesearch an indexPick passagesclear, specific textAnswerwith cited sources
A general flow. AI systems differ, and none of them publish exact rules. Clear, crawlable, answer first pages are easier to quote. Diagram, not client data.

Google's documentation says its AI Overviews and AI Mode show links to supporting pages, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in Google Search to appear as one of those links. It also says there are no extra technical requirements and no special optimization needed beyond normal SEO. AI Overviews only appear when Google's systems decide they add something, so many searches do not show one at all.

OpenAI's documentation says ChatGPT's search features use a crawler called OAI-SearchBot, and that sites which block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. A separate crawler, GPTBot, collects content for training. Blocking one does not block the other.

So the first two questions are simple. Can the tool's crawler read your site, and does the tool's search find your pages? Only after that does the quality of your content decide whether you get cited.

Causes, most common first

This is the order I meet these causes in when a business is missing from AI search, with the way I confirm each one.

  1. 01

The site is weak in regular search

Google's AI features draw on pages that are indexed and eligible to show in Google Search. Other assistants also search the web before they answer. A site that does not rank for the question in normal results rarely gets cited in the AI answer for it.

How I confirm it. I take the questions buyers ask an AI tool, search the same questions on Google, and note where your pages rank, if at all.

  2. 02

Crawlers are blocked without anyone knowing

Security plugins, hosting firewalls, and content delivery networks can block AI crawlers by default. Some robots.txt files block every bot that is not Googlebot. Google's guide says to make sure crawling is allowed both in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting layer.

How I confirm it. I read your robots.txt file for rules that name OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, or all bots, and check your firewall or CDN settings for bot blocking.

  3. 03

Pages do not answer the question in plain text

AI answers quote clear statements: who you are, what you do, where, for whom, and at what price. Pages that say this only inside images, sliders, or vague slogans give the tool nothing to quote.

How I confirm it. I read your key pages with styles and images off and check whether a stranger could answer "what does this business do, where, and for whom" from the text alone.

  4. 04

The web says little about the business

AI tools often name businesses that other sites mention: directories, local news, review sites, industry lists, and forums. A business that exists only on its own website and its map listing gives the tool few sources to agree with.

How I confirm it. I search for your business name in quotes and list the other sites that mention you, then do the same for the competitors the AI answer named.

  5. 05

Details are inconsistent or out of date

Old addresses, old phone numbers, and old service lists on directories and social profiles can end up in an AI answer. Google's guide also says to keep Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

How I confirm it. I compare your name, address, phone, and services across your website, your Business Profile, and the main directories, and list every mismatch.

  6. 06

Structured data disagrees with the page

Schema markup that claims things the page does not show, or that conflicts with it, confuses rather than helps. Google's guide says structured data should match the visible text.

How I confirm it. I test key pages in Google's Rich Results Test and compare the markup with what a visitor sees.

Run the same question three ways

This test takes ten minutes and tells you which gap you have. Use a phone or a browser where you are not signed in, so past searches do not shape the answers.

TestWhat to doWhat the result means
Google searchSearch the question a buyer would ask, such as your service plus your cityIf you are not on the first page, fix regular search first. AI features rarely cite pages that do not rank.
Google AI Overview or AI ModeLook at which sites the AI answer links to for the same questionIf you rank but are not cited, your page probably does not answer the question clearly in text.
ChatGPT with searchAsk the same question and read the sources it listsIf it never finds your site, check whether OAI-SearchBot is blocked, then check how many other sites mention you.

Write down the sites each answer cites. Those are the places the tools trust for your topic, and they show you where your business needs to be mentioned. My free AI search checker is still a demo: it shows sample results and does not scan your site yet, so run the three way test above by hand.

What I check, in order

  1. Step 01

    Test access

I read robots.txt, firewall, and CDN rules for anything that blocks Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, or other search crawlers, and fetch key pages as those bots.

What this finds. Whether AI tools can read the site at all.

  2. Step 02

    Check regular search

I map the questions buyers ask to your rankings in Search Console and in live searches.

What this finds. Questions where you cannot be cited because you do not rank.

  3. Step 03

Read the pages as a machine would

I strip each key page to its text and check that it states who you are, what you do, where, and for whom.

What this finds. Answers that live only in images, slogans, or scripts.

  4. Step 04

    Map who mentions you

I list the sites AI answers cite for your topic and the sites that mention you and your competitors.

What this finds. The directories, lists, and publications where you are missing.

  5. Step 05

    Clean up the facts

I compare your details across your site, your Business Profile, schema, and directories.

What this finds. Old or conflicting facts an AI tool could repeat.

  6. Step 06

    Write the fix list

You get the fixes in order: access, rankings, page text, mentions, consistency.

What this finds. A plan you can check by running the same questions again.

Most of these checks overlap with a technical SEO health check, and the page text work overlaps with good service writing. The part that is new is mapping which outside sites the answers rely on.

What I can show you, and what I cannot

I do not have a published case with screenshots that shows a business moving into AI answers, so this page makes no AI visibility claim and shows no number for it. Tracking AI answers is still unreliable: the same question can give different answers to different people, minutes apart.

What I can show is work on the things AI features in Google draw from. On a media site I worked on, consolidating thin archive pages into topic hubs supported reach of impressions in one 3 month window of Search Console data. That screenshot shows one period only, so it supports reach, not growth, and it says nothing about AI answers directly. The details are in the high reach content case.

If someone offers to put you in ChatGPT's answers for a fee, ask how they control what the tool says. Nobody outside OpenAI or Google does.

What it costs, and what changes the price

Each price here is in Pakistani rupees and comes from the same list I publish for every service.

OptionPriceBest when
Strategy callPKR 15,000 per hourYou want to run the three way test with me and fix things yourself
Forensic technical SEO auditPKR 120,000 one time, 7 to 10 business daysYou want access, rankings, page text, and mentions checked in one report
Commercial growth retainerPKR 150,000 per monthYou want the fixes made and new pages written over time
Market leader and scalePKR 280,000 per monthYou run a large site and want AI visibility work alongside other SEO

The effort depends on whether crawler access is blocked, how well the site already ranks, and how few outside sites mention you. If a short session will do, talk it through on a call. If you want the work done month by month, the AI SEO service covers it. To see what fits your budget, look at the PKR price plans.

How long it takes to see a change

  1. Week 1

    Access and gaps

Crawler blocks are removed, and you get the three way test results for your main questions.

  2. Month 1

    Pages and facts

Key pages state who you are, what you do, and where in plain text, and your details match everywhere.

  3. Month 3

    Mentions and rankings

Listings and mentions on the sites AI answers trust build up, and we run the same questions again.

Unblocking a crawler is quick, but the tool still has to recrawl your site. Ranking and mention work takes months. Because AI answers change from one person to the next, I judge progress over many runs of the same questions, not one screenshot. I cannot promise you will be named in any answer.

Notes for businesses in Pakistan

People in Pakistan ask AI tools in English, in Roman Urdu, and sometimes in Urdu. Run your test questions in the language your customers use, because the cited sources can differ.

Local directories, business listings, and city guides are often the sources AI answers lean on for "best in Lahore" or "near me in Karachi" style questions. Make sure your business is listed on the main ones with the same name, address, and phone. Consistent local listings across directories are the plain version of this work.

Many Pakistani business sites are built by agencies that add aggressive bot protection on shared hosting. Ask your developer what the firewall blocks before you assume the content is the problem.

Your Google Business Profile feeds the local parts of Google's answers. If it is not showing on the map either, start with the guide to a business that does not appear on Google Maps. Owners in Islamabad can also see how I work with businesses in Islamabad.

The tools I use for this

  • Your robots.txt file and your firewall or CDN settings, to check crawler access
  • Google Search Console, for indexing and the queries your pages rank for
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT with search, run signed out
  • Google's Rich Results Test, to compare structured data with the visible page
  • A spreadsheet of the sources each AI answer cites, run again over time

Frequently asked questions

Why is my business missing from AI search answers?

Usually because the tool's crawler is blocked, your site does not rank for the question in regular search, or few other sites mention you. Check those three in that order.

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt and firewall, make sure your pages state clearly what you do and where, and get listed and mentioned on the sites ChatGPT cites for your topic. Nobody can promise a mention.

How do I appear in Google AI Overviews?

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no extra technical requirements. In practice, pages that rank well and answer the question clearly in text are the ones that get linked.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

It helps Google understand a page, and Google says structured data should match the visible text. It does not replace clear writing or rankings, and markup that disagrees with the page can hurt trust.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

Google does not require one for its AI features. Some other tools may read it. It is cheap to add, but it will not fix blocked crawlers, weak rankings, or missing mentions.

Can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Google says traffic from AI features is included in the Performance report under the Web search type. It is not shown as a separate line, so you read it as part of your overall search traffic.

Should I block AI crawlers?

That depends on what you want. Blocking training crawlers like GPTBot is a content choice. Blocking search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of that tool's answers. Decide for each crawler on its own.

Why does the AI answer show wrong details about my business?

It is repeating old or conflicting information from somewhere on the web. Find the sources it cites, correct your details there, and keep your website and Business Profile current.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

Mostly it is the same work with a few extra checks: crawler access for each AI tool, plain text answers, and mentions on the sites those tools cite. A site with weak SEO rarely does well in AI answers.
